“I Think I Didn’t”

“I Think I Didn’t”

In this work, the complexity of the internal installation is intensified by the box covering it. It is attributed to an instance when one of my classmates did something horrible to my friend and tried to absolve himself from guilt by saying, “I think I didn’t do anything like that.” There are supporters of both sides, but I think no one (including me) knows the whole picture.

In the 2015 work Still Life with Desk, Sarah Sze expressed the idea of “timing” when viewing the artwork: just like how the first sentence of a book would be so different from the last one, the order of how viewers see the artwork matters. In my work, I tried to influence the “timing” of how audiences see it.

The three holes on the top limit viewers’ ability to view the full installation inside. This alludes to the level of difficulty when we try to observe the “entire picture” of an event. The fact that the artwork has a low placement during the critique resembles the inevitable effort one has to spend to try to observe the full image of an event. The darkness inside means that viewers have to use their own tools to find out what’s inside, just like when we try to understand an issue in our own ways. The uniform color of different materials I’ve chosen offers viewers the maximum ability to “color the work” in their minds, representing due to “the danger of the single story,” we have very different images in our minds about an issue. The mirror inside reflects the imagery of viewers, symboling the subjectivity of views: when one tries to interpret an issue, they always bring their opinions, stance, and prejudice into the issue, which prevents them from making a balanced judgment — they see some aspects of themselves in their understandings.

Like how Banksy shredded the piece after the auction and how Ai Weiwei destroyed the Han-dynasty vases, the process of burying the installation with the box gives the whole piece deeper meanings.
