Self Portrait 2 is a new kind of self-portrait that focuses on the inside. From the very beginning, I wished to make a joyful piece. That is why Self Portrait 2 is designed to be an arcade.

You may ask, where is the person? The answer: in every inch of this piece. It has three pillars: the walls, four P.D.F. (Please Don’t Fall) columns, and interactions. The walls mark this installation’s boundaries and set the context of Self Portrait 2. They are filled with doodles — something I do every day — and glyphs corresponding to the four P.D.F.s, immersing the audience in the “Sierra Space.”

The P.D.F. (Please Don’t Fall) columns each take a unique form and illustrate a different personality: my secret corner, friendships, creativity, and finding fun in the mundane. It is not only the finished piece that conveys who I am but also the reasons and processes behind the design choices — such as color selections, glyphs, materials, images, patterns, placement of images and phrases, and decisions to display or hide elements.

The P.D.F.s function as sites of interaction, through which the work can become more complete in unexpected ways.

The audience either looks into the column, peels things off to reveal a hidden layer, draws based on my prompts strips, or pastes photos I took onto them.

The poetic part of Self Portrait 2 is that while seeing the finished piece gives you a basic understanding of my personality, engaging and contemplating lets the audience enter my creative process and consider the meanings behind each design choice.

The interactions "completed" Self Portrait 2. The yellow column evolved into people’s creative canvas, the violet one into a collage of my friend’s inspirational words, and the pink one into a photomosaic of a sunset.

"All in all, the creative act is not performed by the artist alone; the spectator brings the work in contact with the external world by deciphering and interpreting its inner qualifications and thus adds [their] contribution to the creative act."
